Flashback Friday - Survey's

This is our first week doing flashback Friday and I'm very excited about it. Last year at this time our blog was only a few weeks old and our primary purpose was talking about money. I wrote this article about the different survey companies I participate in. Now reading this article a year later I can say I still participate in these three companies. Now is the time of year when I usually cash out to help pay for Christmas presents, but this year I decided not to. I'm going to leave the points in my account and save them up. We are hoping to go on a cruise in a year so I'm going to keep taking surveys and collecting the points and then when I need help paying for the cruise I will cash out. Our Christmas presents haven't been too expensive this year. That is why I changed my normal plan. Once again, if you have any other survey sites that aren't scams, I'd love to hear about them. Happy Flashback Friday!

Are the "make money by taking surveys online" scams?

I would say most of these paid survey sites are scams. A lot of these sites want you to pay them anywhere from $25 up and they will give you a list of survey websites that pay you for taking surveys. A couple years ago when I was in college I fell for this and I paid $35 to get this magical list filled with money making opportunities. After joining about 100 survey websites, I figured out that I had been scammed out of $35. I emailed the website I had paid and demanded a refund. They did refund my money, while all the while I was still enrolled in these survey sites. I participated in as many surveys I could in hopes of receiving check after check. The checks never came so I slowly opted out of a lot of the sites. 3 years later my survey list is down to 3 that I participate in regularly and I do receive money.
The first website is Lightspeed Consumer Panel. At this site you take surveys for points (on average about 75 pts per survey) when you get a certain number of points you can cash in for gifts, gift cards, electronics, and money via paypal. For example to get $10 on paypal (which you can transfer into your bank account) is costs 1150 points. I usually save up my points until Christmas time and then cash in to help pay for my presents. This year I choose not to cash in but if I would have cashed in last December I would have gotten $40 which is 4600 points. It isn't much and it took me 11 months, but it is money that I haven't had to work very hard for and its better than nothing.
The second website is MySurvey . This website also does points for surveys but the point to money ratio is a lot better. Here 1000 points is equal to $10. This website sends you a check. If I would have cashed in my points I would have gotten $50 for my 5000 points. Here you can also cash in for other things such as gifts, electronics, tools, a grill, you can also donate to a charity with your points, it is great!
The third website doesn't give you points, it only enters you into a raffle and they have like 25 winners a month or so. Oh I should mention the other two sites also do raffles on top of the point system for more chances to win things. The third website is NPD Online Research . I take these surveys because I don't mind doing it. They only take about 5-10 minutes and so it isn't a big deal to me that I'm only getting a "chance" to win. Last May I did win $100 which they sent in check form after having been a member and taking surveys for 2+ years, so it balanced out with about as much money as I'm making with the other sites.
None of these sites will get you rich quick, I haven't figured out how to do that yet, but they will get you about an extra $100 a year which is nice for some mad money. And all of you may have more qualifying factors in your life to provide you with more surveys. You fill out a little questionnaire about yourself so they know what surveys apply to you, so everyone's opportunities are different. I don't drink or smoke or have pets or have multiple cars or many kids and so there's only so much to ask me, others with those things probably get more surveys than I do. I hope this helps and will provide you with a little extra money. If you have some other good surveys sites I'd love to know about them!!

I'd like to invite you now to leave a comment and you can include a link to your favorite Flashback Friday article on your blog! I will be making a button this week for Flashback Friday and everyone who participates in welcome to take the button and put it on their site to advertise Flashback Friday!

Myth Busting Monday - Water Drains Backwards

I wanted to start Myth Busting Monday with my all time favorite myth:

Water drains backwards in the Southern Hemisphere due to the Earth's rotation

Here is one quote I found while researching this myth:

Not only is the Earth's rotation too weak to affect the direction of water flowing in a drain, tests you can easily perform in a few washrooms will show that water whirlpools both ways depending on the sinks structure, not the hemisphere. [source]
In researching this myth I found out about something called Coriolis force, here is the wikipedia entry which gives a big, long technical definition and explanation. Basically the Coriolis force is the force that one spinning object has on another object in motion; an example of the Coriolis force is the spinning earth causes tornados and hurricanes in the northern hemisphere to spin counterclockwise and clockwise in the southern hemisphere. This might lead one to think that the same effect occurs with draining water but here is a quote I found about the relating the Coriolis force to draining water:
The Coriolis force is so small, that it plays no role in determining the direction of rotation of a draining sink anymore than it does the direction of a spinning CD. [source]
Here is an explanation from snopes as to why water draining in the direction is does:
Toilets and sinks drain in the directions they do because of the way water is directed into them or pulled from them. If water enters in a swirling motion (as it does when a toilet is flushed, for example), the water will exit in that same swirling pattern; as well, most basins have irregular surfaces and are not perfectly level, factors that influence the direction in which water spirals down their drains. The configuration of taps and drains is responsible for the direction of spin given to water draining from sinks and bathtubs to a degree that overwhelms the slight influence of the Coriolis force.[source]
I have always wanted to call someone in Australia and ask if their toilet bowl flushes down clockwise or counter clockwise, but now I can avoid the huge phone bill that would result by knowing that a toilet bowl flushes a certain direction depending on how it is made.

What are your thoughts about this myth, let us know in the comments.

Shopping Online

A lot more people are doing their holiday shopping online these days. I personally prefer to shop in stores and get my gifts that way. However, I do enjoy Ebay every now and again. When I am looking for presents for my husband or myself and I don't mind them to be second hand, I first go to Ebay to see if I can get a deal. This Christmas I have purchased a couple presents from Ebay and Amazon and I am looking into a couple more. I'm all about a bargain! Do you get your gifts online? What sites do you use to shop online?

Fun New Segments

Starting this next week at Random Encounters of We are some fun new segments. While we were in Germany Random Encounters had its first birthday! yay! Happy Birthday to us! This was a major milestone for us and a good place to bring in some fun, new articles. Every Monday will now be "Mythbusting Monday" where my husband will tackle some well known and not so well known myths floating around. Then on Friday's it will be "Flashback Friday." I will be going through our articles of the week from a year ago and picking out my favorite one to feature. I will add to, or make some changes and comments on that article depending on how my opinions or information has changed. Under the comment section of Flashback Friday you are also welcome to post a link to your favorite article from your blog from a year ago. I think it will be a lot of fun to relive the past, help each other with traffic, and see what we were talking about a year ago. I think these 2 programs will be a fun addition and a great way to add some structure to the blog. Any comments, suggestions, or opinions will be very welcomed!

Crazy Holiday Shopping

I love to do my holiday shopping! Black Friday is very fun for me. I don't get up to be at the stores at 4am unless there is something I absolutely have to have, but I will make it by 6am (which is early for me). This year the three of us went together. We didn't want to leave our daughter at any friends houses because they were planning on shopping also so we brought her along, and it wasn't a big deal. There were some things at Target we wanted to get, but we have to drive an hour to get there. By the time we got to Target the games we wanted were gone but we were able to get some movies we had wanted. We stopped by Kohl's but the lines wrapped all the way around the store so we decided to not even bother. Things were crazy, store shelves were empty, and people were throwing things around but it was a fun time! It really gets you in the mood for Christmas! Did you go holiday shopping and fight the crowds? Or relax at home after a very tasty holiday?

Our Thanksgiving Food

These are the dishes we took to our friends house for Thanksgiving. We took a fruit plate with dip, chocolate cheesecake dessert, raspberry and pineapple jello salad and a potato casserole (we call them funeral potatoes). It was a lot of fun and we had a lot of good food! It was very nice to have a stress free holiday not having to prepare everything myself, although we are missing not having all the nice leftovers so we may be making our own turkey this weekend to make up for it!!

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you who are celebrating it today! Since we don't have any family near, we are going to a friend's house for Thanksgiving. This means I don't have to do the bulk of the cooking. I will be taking pictures of what I did take.

This is a good time to share what I'm Thankful for. I'm thankful for my family, my husband's job and all that it provides for us, my home, to live in the USA, to have nice friends that would think of us on Thanksgiving, and I'm thankful for all the other incredible blessings in my life. I know that I am blessed and I'm glad to have a holiday to express it. I hope all of you have a fabulous Thanksgiving, or a great Thursday depending on where you live.

Police Gear

I don't know how things work in the world of police officers. I don't know if they have to provide their own uniform, but I do imagine they need several pairs of everything. There is a website where you can buy your 5.11 tactical police gear. If you are an officer in need of more uniform clothes, check it out. From browsing the site it looks as though they carry a lot of different clothes and products. It is your one stop uniform shop.

Some Beautiful Sites in Germany

Our hotel was in a big park that had a lot of beautiful historic buildings. This pretty fountain and building were in that park. We were lucky to see this fountain on, because a couple days after this picture they turned off the fountain to prepare for winter. It was freezing cold, so none of the other fountains were running.
This is a burned out church in Hannover, Germany. It was blown up in the war and only the exterior walls are still standing. It was beautiful to see.
This is in the small town on Rinteln. It was a very pretty town. I love the old buildings and architecture.
I love these windmills. They aren't working anymore, but they are open for tours. When we came across this windmill it wasn't open so we settled for pictures.
This last picture was taken in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. This town is definitely the place to visit in Germany. It is old and historic and very beautiful!! Here is where I found my cuckoo clock that I bought. When it arrives in the mail I'll be sure to post a picture.

Germany overall was a very fun time. It was very beautiful. All the trees were multiple colors and the leaves had began to fall. The weather was freezing and rainy, but it was incredible. Two week ended up being a very long time. I'm very happy to be home and start preparing for the holidays. This trip certainly helped me be grateful that I live in the USA, I love my home and where I live, I appreciate the food I think of as normal and I'm grateful for a non feather pillow on my bed. I'm ready for Thanksgiving!

And We're Back!

We got back from Germany on Friday night. We had a great time! Germany is very beautiful! It was freezing cold there, but regardless we did a lot of exploring. My husband was there on business so during the day it was just me and my daughter walking around and seeing the sights. On the weekend we took some driving trips to see places we really wanted to see. We took a tour of a castle in Buckeburg, explored downtown Hannover, and took a 4 hour drive to see Rothenburg ob der Tauber. It was incredible. I am now overloaded with laundry and unpacking. As soon as I can get a handle on things today, I'm going to post a couple pictures of the highlights of our trip. Thanks for sticking with us while we were away. Last night I checked some of this blogs stats and things remained constant and improving while we were away. Thanks for the patience while we were away. Also, later on today I plan on announcing some of the new programs Random Encounters of We will be starting this next week! Exciting things are happening!

We're off... for a time

This blog will be quiet for a little while coming up here soon. We are leaving for Germany Friday for 2 weeks and as a result I won't be posting. I don't know what our internet situation will be so if I can post free of charge, I definitely will. If I can't, I will be spending my money on better things like German chocolate! With the poor exchange rate I have to pick and choose!! :) We will be returning home on November 2nd and I will be sure to tell you the highlights of the trip. I'm going to try and be brave and do some exploring while my husband is working (did I mention this is a business trip for me, and vacation for me!) I tend to be a wuss in foreign countries so I'm hoping that most people speak English and this is isn't too complicated to ride the trains and things. We have never been to Europe so this will be a completely new experience. Wish me luck we are off to Europe!
