Losing PageRank

When I got home from Germany I noticed my PageRank had been slashed in half. I had no idea what had happened, other than I hadn't blogged for two weeks. I didn't think that was reason enough to cut my page rank. I have felt discouraged because of this because there aren't as many opportunities available to lower page rank blogs. Well I just read that google was going through the system and slashing the page rank of those blogs that participate in payperpost and those sponsored programs. Payperpost has been really slow for me for a couple months, and if my page rank is going to be hurt from participating in their program I will discontinue my use of payperpost. My page rank is more important to me than $5 here and there from payperpost. A lot of people do really well on payperpost, but my blog doesn't. What will be interesting is that when you have a high page rank on payperpost you get really high paying opportunities, but if those people are being punished for using payperpost their page rank will be cut and then they won't be getting those great opportunities anymore. We'll see what happens to payperpost. Maybe they can come to a compromise. All I know is that I won't be participating in payperpost anymore in hopes of returning my page rank to 4 and continue my goals of increasing it. Any comments, suggestions or more information would be welcomed.

One Month Countdown

We are one month away from some very exciting things. The first exciting thing is that this blog will be turning 1!! Yay! On November 6 this blog will be turning one. I wanted to have a big blow out contest but exciting thing number two is going to delay a big blow out birthday party for Random Encounters of We and some exciting 1 year old events. Exciting thing number two is that we are going to Germany on November 2. I have been researching Germany but haven't been getting very far. When I type in some of the cities we will be a lot of the sites come up in German. Any one with any advice or good websites to visit regarding Germany please comment. If you are from Germany and you have tips for traveling there in November that would be fantastic! When we get back from Germany we will have a big birthday party and start some new posting ideas! This is going to be very exciting!

Participation in Blog Contests

Why don't you participate?

I completely understand why people don't participate in blog contests. There is only one prize most of the time and you feel like you'll never win it, or the task to enter into the contest isn't worth your time. But what if everyone else feels that way? Someone has to win and if not too many participate then your odds are good.

Participate! Someone has to win!

With my last blog contest only 5 people participated. That is pathetic, but good odds for those people who participated. Right now I am 2 days into a new blog contest and not one soul is participating right now. I know I haven't given it much of a chance, but still. Two days in and nothing. If only one person participated they will win it, so why doesn't at least one person try? Especially with the current contest where you can get as many entries into it as you want to. It doesn't take a lot of effort to enter. Simple copy and pasting code into a post on your own site will get you as many entries as you would like so why aren't people participating yet? This puts the odds of you winning in your own hands. It's a fun prize so let's have a fun contest! Woohoo!

#2 Spot

Well I have start my September marketing campaign on Link Referral for Random Encounters of We. I purchased a spot in the top 5 of the miscellaneous category. Right now I am currently ranked #2 which is pretty good. This method should bring in a lot of traffic and hopefully people will discover what a great blog it is and subscribe! I am currently sign up for two months for this campaign so we will see what a difference it makes and perhaps continue. It cost me $70 to purchase a top spot. Hopefully through being in the being of peoples searching on link referral I will be able to recover that $70 and then some. I will be sure to let you know. If you click on the Link Referral link in the beginning of this post it will take you to the page where I am currently number! Feel free to check it out!

Mimicking Success

There are many bloggers out there that are very successful with their blogs. My question today is if you mimic their success will you also become successful?

What do I mean by Mimicking?

When I talk about mimicking a successful blogger I don't mean plagiarism or any other type of stealing content. I'm talking about the arrangement of page elements. If a successful blogger has their ads in a certain place on their blog, perhaps I will benefit by moving my ads to that location on my website. If the successful blogger also has a certain page layout that places the posts and referral buttons in different places than I have mine, if I rotate things will that also make me successful. Also, what about their ad choices? I personally have decided to use a certain ad company on my blog because one of these successful bloggers uses it on their website and I'm hoping this will help improve my ad revenue.

I honestly don't know the answer to my question. On one hand if someone has gained success from doing things a certain way than that means their way works. If I try to arrange things on my log in the same way does that mean it should also work for me? Probably not to the same extent as the original successful blogger because our content will be different and we already have different readership, but it should improve things, right?

At the same time, on the other and people give differemt advice for ad placement because different blogs see different success with their ads in different places. If everyone was successful with their ads in the same place, things would be a lot easier. We all would be doing a lot better than we are because we would already know the answer.

My Answer and Thoughts

So, what do you think? If you mimic a successful blogger in areas as page layout and design, but not breaking any of the rules will you become more successful? I think my answer is yes but not for the reason you would think. My answer is yes because when you update and change your blog it improves your statistics. When you change things around on your blog it usually is for the better because you have learned a better way of doing things or you are in the process or tweaking things. This will make you more successful. I guess this makes my 'yes' answer also applicable to the question. Mimicking a successful blogger will probably make you more successful because you will be tweaking in a way that is more beneficial.

What do you think? Will mimicking success make you more successful? Why?

Another Directory, Another Banner

I'm trying out a couple new directories to see if they are worth it or if they will be a waste like so many of them are. I try to join directories where I don't have to link back, because I have done that and all it does is clutter your blog. I decided to add the code in a post so it wouldn't clutter my sidebar! I'll let you know if the traffic start rolling in because of these blog directories!

Increasing Revenue and Traffic

Well it's a new month and a start of a fresh clean slate. Now is the time to begin new programs to help increase your sites traffic and revenue.

Link Referral

In September I am going to start a new marketing program with Link Referral. If you are interested I have a button on the side bar you can click on that will take you there and tell you about the program. It basically is a blog directory in which you can control how high up you are on the lists by visiting other members sites. This month I will be buying one of the top slots to see how that will improve my blog's performance.

Bidvertiser

I am very impressed so far with how my ads are doing on Bidvertiser. They have increased my sites revenue by %35. I also have a Bidvertiser button linking to this site if you are interested in seeing how they can help increase your website's traffic and revenue. I will continue my ad programs in September and I am confident all my stats will continue to rise.

Text Link Ads

This program is a little more tricky to participate in the ad program because they have to approve your site, but there is always affiliate sales through text link ads. John Chow just released his August income report and in that report he states that he made a nice chuck of this $17,000+ in August from Text Link Ads. It also is one of John Chows recommended money makers. Again, if you are interested in this program I have a button on the right hand sidebar about half way down. I have enjoyed Text Link Ads and through the constant improvement of my site I also expect this to increase my revenue.

Blog Contests

My first blog contest just ended yesterday. It was a lot of fun to put on and I am excited to continue doing them. I have a great prize idea but I haven't bought all the things that go in the prize pack yet so I'm going to have a mini contest before the big one. I will start this contest on Monday so check back so you can participate!

How are you statistics doing? What programs are you implementing to help increase your blogs traffic and revenue? I would love to hear any suggestions and ideas.

Random Is My Niche

I have heard time and time again that in order to have a successful website it needs to be in a specific niche. I have heard that blogs that are too broad don't do as well as those with a certain topic. It is true that I have certain blogs about certain topics that I count on for information, but it is also true that fun blogs with different articles are exciting to read also. I think I fall into that category.

Tonight at dinner I had a brilliant idea for a new catch phrase for Random Encounters of We. It will be: "Random is my Niche". I do not feel like I know enough about one subject to write a blog all about that one thing. I do feel like I know some things about a lot of things and so I'm sticking to my "random" concept and I'm going to be successful. I recently wrote an article about my thoughts on success and what that means to me so check out that article also.

If you take notice to my blog over its lifetime you will see a pattern of topics that do reoccur. I write a lot of money and financial matters. I have shared some blogging tips to help increase your website traffic and revenue. I also often share personal stories and experiences.

I want to start a trend. There have to be more people out there besides me that have a mixture of content on their blog and I want all of us like that to have a niche, it called random and it is just as good as any other niche!

I Want Success

In this post I will be spilling some of my guts so please be kind in your comments, thanks!

What is success? Everyone defines it differently. When I started this blog in November of 2006 I didn't know anything about blogging and so I didn't set any goals. It wasn't until about 4 months later that I started to learn how huge the blogosphere is and the potential it has to be a money maker. I then set a couple goals for myself.

1. To make between $200-$300 per month through google adsense and other ad networks. To some this is a lot of money (like me) to others this is peanuts. I figured once I got to that goal the numbers would continue to increase because I would continue to work on the blog.

- My progress on this was very slow in the beginning. I was writing a lot of articles, but they didn't mean anything. They were about stupid things that no one wanted to read, not even me. Lately I have been goal driven and have a desire to write good content that is full of sustenance. I make some money with sponsored posts so if I were to count those towards my goal I would be about there. Sponsored posts aren't part of my goal though, so it is nice to have a couple hundred dollars in extra money from those, but I want my ads to take off.

2. To have 20+ subscribers. I thought with writing posts the subscribers would just naturally come. Well if your content is good and interesting this is probably true, but with the content I used to produce it wasn't happening. Lately my subscribers have gone up a little. This is partly because of my current blog contest which is all about subscribing to this blog. I do think that my more knowledgeable and heart filled content does have something to do with it.

- I have recently added the feedburner subscriber count button on the blog because I care how many subscribers I have. If everyone sees the number perhaps they will become interested in subscribing, or it will remind them that they want to subscribe.

To have a successful blog or website I know it requires a lot of knowledge. You have to know a little bit about programming to make the website. Even though I am using a free blogger website, we still have had to program the template and add things to it. We didn't want a standard free blogger template. You might think it is a standard issue, but it is a custom template. Basic knowledge of computers and internet I'm pretty good at but beyond that it is hard for me and I really have to work at it. For exampleI know what SEO stands for and I have read tons of articles to trying to understand it, but I haven't been able to really grasp the concept and how to make my blog SEO friendly yet. I'm only now beginning to understand that a blog won't sell itself, you really have to work at it. With my bidvertiser ads which are going extremely well and having people write sponsored reviews about my blog my traffic and income has picked up.

In the beginning when we first decided to start a blog it was because of an article we read on Steve Pavlina's site. He is a motivational speaker and has a very successful self help website. He said that it took his website about 6 months to become "successful" and now he is making thousands of dollars a month from it. In my not-so-knowledgeable mind I thought we could pull that off. Well here we are almost a year old and not meeting our goals, but with my new plans being implemented we are in the right direction and starting to make very good progress.

If you have any tips, or lessons for me to learn please comment. I feel like a sponge right now and really want to learn from other people's successes.

Bidvertiser

As I have previously mentioned I am trying some new techniques for advertising my blog and spreading the great news of Random Encounters of We. Bidvertiser recently sent me an email saying they were giving people $20 in ads to try out their services. I decided to sign up. I didn't expect much since google adwords isn't turning out very well. Surprisingly the Bidvertiser ad is going extremely well. I have seen my adsense revenue skyrocket since I've had my ad running. Given my adsense revenue wasn't very big I have been super excited at the steady stream of clicks resulting in over $3 per day. My unique visitor count has also increase. I used up the $20 allotment very quickly and so I've decided to use some of my own money and continue my Bidvertiser campaign for a week to see if the trend continues. I am so stoked that this ad campaign has worked well. If you are interested in checking out Bidvertiser and taking advantage of the free $20 ad promotion you can click on the Bidvertiser button on the right sidebar about half way down. Best of luck to your ad campaigns!

Random Encounters of We Image

Close your eyes. Are they closed? No! Well close them! Ok open them (if you're eyes are closed you shouldn't be able to read that!) Just kidding. Hopefully everybody's eyes are now open.

When you close your eyes and think of Random Encounters of We, what do you think of? What do you see? We are wanting to have a banner designed for Random Encounters of We, but we don't know what we want the banner to look like. I thought I would get some input from the peanut gallery (that's you) and see what you think of Random Encounters of We. Any and all comments are welcome ( as long as they are appropriate of course). We need some help and the readers are the perfect people to ask for help! Thanks in advance!

Everyone is Writing about Everything

A couple of days ago I was asking myself a question: If everything has already been written about why do we keep writing? Of course when it comes to news that happens and changes everyday, so that topic was excluded from my thinking. I was thinking more along the lines of blogging tips, money making tips, google adsense optimization, SEO and such. I felt like since a million people have already written millions of articles about those topics, why do people keep writing them. A lot of what people write is useless because someone with more knowledge or more experience has already adressed that topic.

Later it occurred to me that it is wonderful and appropriate that everyone is writing about the same things because everyone's experience is different and can help different people. Just because John Chow has success with one way doesn't mean that will work for me, but maybe a little unheard of blog has the best advice for my blog! Everyone's experience with all of these things is different therefore they have something different to say.

I'm glad I was able to work through this question before I wrote a post about it and felt stupid by all the response that people should keep writing about previously written things. This blog might just be helping me get smarter!

My Ad Networks

I have a lot of hope in ad networks. For a lot of people they bring in a fair amount of money. I have read a lot of blogs and articles saying that the potential is there because it works for them. Because of this, I have tried many ad networks to less than what I would call success.

Adsense

This seems to be the most popular because it really does have potential to bring in a lot of money. I like adsense. My numbers aren't what I would like them to be, but every month I see improvement, and as I try to improve my blog and my readership, I'm sure things will get better.

Auction Ads

These ads seemed like such a great idea. It is fresh and new. Auction ads are on the right hand side of the page. They have the pictures of products that are for sale and you can click on them and participate in the bidding of that product to win. I think the only way to receive money through auction ads is for someone who clicked on your ad to win the product. Needless to say, this is not a money maker and all my hopes were dashed. I am planning on taking it off after I try these last set of ads about money. People love money, so I'm taking this approach and if nothing comes of it, they are gone!

AdBrite

I have had AdBrite ads on Random Games for a while and didn't really see any progress in it. They then came out with a new way of advertising which is through select words on a page and the ad pops up when you hover over it. I have put those type of ads on this blog in hopes of seeing some success. Slowly (very slowly) but surely I'm starting to get a few cents here and there from AdBrite. I was about to pull them off the blog also, but I think I'll keep them around for a little while in hopes that they take off!

How are your ad networks doing? Which ones are the most successful??

I'm trying rally hard to provide a useful blog, full of information. I so think it is loaded full of information, but apparently not the kind of information people want to read. I'm trying really hard to have interesting and useful content that attracts people, but I need to keep trying harder. Any input would be very valuable to me! Thanks!!

Let's all be subscribers

I read a lot of blogs that offer tips and advice to succeed in the blogosphere. A lot of these blogs say that if you are personal, sincere, honest, and trustworthy then people will want to read your blog. I try to be personal and I am always sincere and honest and yet I don't have many subscribers or loyal readers. This blog has been around for almost a year and I have tried these things with not much success. Things are definitely better than they used to be but I'm not meeting the goals I was aiming for. Some of which include making at least $10/month with adsense, and having double digits subscribers. I thought surely by now this would be obtainable. So since I have tried the tips that "professional" bloggers have put out there what would your suggestions be? How can I make things better to improve my readership rates and adsense rates?

I'm trying a new method that is like the law of reciprocity. Perhaps if I subscribe to others' blogs and click on their ads that interest me then maybe the favor will be returned and more people will subscribe to my blog and click on my ads, after all, isn't this what we all want?

Lookin for Links!

OK I have seen other blogs do this so I'm going to try it also. Many blogs search for blogs to link with to improve their rankings and such. I am looking for blogs and bloggers who like my blog and would like to exchange links. I have made some effort to get some links to blogs I like and found myself getting brushed off from the authors of those blogs, so now I'll initiate the link love. If you would like to exchange links please leave a comment with your blog saying you have linked with me, I will then link to you and visit your blog and leave a comment! This will help both parties out with traffic and exposure. Let's all help each other out with links!!

Sponsors

I love sponsors and sponsored posts. Some people think it a tragedy to be paid to write on their blog. I think it is innovative and entrepreneurial. My husband works full time and I stay home with our baby. I feel it is important for me to contribute to our finances in some way. Of course the money I make online will never compare to my salary, but it does provide some "fun" money. I really appreciate the paid opportunities I get to post like this one that is sponsored by Navtej, facebook profile for Navtej, Linkedin Navtej, Yahoo user Navtej, and Navtej wordpress blog.

Blog Carnivals

When I first heard about blog carnivals I wasn't too excited to participated. I would check out the Blog Carnival website but didn't really find anything I wanted to participate in. Recently, though, my attitude has completely changed! I love blog carnivals! There are so many topics that you can pretty much find one to submit any of your posts to. They bring in a lot of quality traffic and blog carnival quests usually leave comments, which is always fun in my opinion. On top of all of these things, they provide a link to your blog. That is the biggest bonus of them all. Some of the blogs that host blog carnivals are members of Technorati, so by participating I have greatly improved my ranking with them, which also helps bring in traffic. It is a wonderful cycle. A couple weeks ago registers with the blog carnival website so I could host a carnival if I wanted to. I do want to, but since I have no idea what goes into hosting I'm a little nervous about messing it up. I am also at a lack of an idea for a carnival. Any suggestions and tips would be very welcome!! Happy Posting!

Top 10 Sins of Blog Usability

Over at SiteProNews Linda Bustos just wrote an article about the Top 10 Sins of Blog Usability. In the article she gives tips for improves and some do's and don'ts for blogging. As I am always looking to improve my blogs I really appreciated this article and thought I would share it.

10. Sending Mixed Signals

The main purpose of your blog should be decided from the very beginning and should be evident in every post there after. Linda and many other writing about how to make professional blogs success have stated that random or personal entry blogs don't make for very successful blogs. Now I realize this is exactly what this blog is, but that what this blogs purpose is. I have some other blogs (Random Games and Random Super Heroes) that have a distinct purpose and so this mainly applies for those blogs.

9. Making it Hard to Subscribe

Asking for a subscription is ok to do. A lot of people don't know how to use an RSS feed so offer email options as well. Linda says that subscribers are very important to a blogs success.

8. Inconsistent Posting

Once you have some loyal subscribers (and probably some that aren't so loyal) you'll need to be consistently updating your website. Your readers want to hear from you, so give them what they want. You should stick to a schedule that is realistic with the amount of time you have to give. Linda gives a tip for those times that you don't have anything to post about. "Blog about someone else's posts related to your topic and include a link back to that post." It won't hurt you if you link to someone else's site and your reader go check it out. The owner of the website will appreciate the link and your reader will appreciate some more useful content provided by you.

7. No Contact Info.

Let your readers contact you. Don't be an anonymous blogger. Trust is gain by your readers if they feel they know who is behind the blog and they feel they know you a little. I like to have my email address on my blog so my readers feel they can contact me at any time, as well as through monitoring my comments. Which leads into...

6. Not Moderating Comments

Spammers would love to come and corrupt the comments on your blog, make sure to monitor your comments and take care of these problems as they arise. Spam will annoy not only the author of the blog but it's readers as well.

5. Excessive Advertising

Make sure your ads and/or affiliate links don't over shadow your useful content. Monetizing a blog is fine as long as the ads don't get in the way or interrupt the content your readers are trying to feast on. Linda, and others, recommend new blogs waiting a while until some good useful posts are up before running ads.

4. Not Linking to Posts

Whenever I talk about another site, or an article I found somewhere I also put a link to it. This is appropriate in order to let your readers check it out for themselves, get their own take on the story and get some background info on the article. It is also a compliment to the author of the website with whom you are referring. This kind of generosity will be noticed and perhaps reciprocated.

3. Dark Background, Light Text

I struggle with my color choices. The colors I seen to like, are not colors everyone else likes. I found this out from multiple comments from my readers asking for color changes. I appreciated the feedback. you don't want to have your readers straining their eyes to read your posts. The hard to read colors for instants are white text on a dark background, or blocks of red. Stick to easy to read colors. Black text on a white backdrop is always a safe bet.

2. No Search Box

Readers may not remember exactly where a post is that they enjoyed, or perhaps they want to follow up on comments they left. Having a search box some easy to find place on your blog is a good way for people to easily find what they are looking for.

1. Hiding Navigation

Easy navigation is very important for your readers sanity. Don't make your reader scroll down very far before they find your archives, or listed posts or labels. Labeling your posts is a great idea to make things easier on your readers, as well as for search engines. Tagging your posts are also a key way of receiving traffic, especially from huge sites like Technorati. Linda also points out that the easier to navigate the better, and with tagging and labeling perhaps "less is more."

I hope this article help you reevaluate some things about your blog or website and help make it a little better. As we begin 2007 I know my goal is to continually improve Random Encounters of We as well as the other blogs I've listed above. Any comments about this article are very much welcome.

Link Referral

If you look to the right of the posts you will see a sea of buttons. One of the buttons that flashes is from Link Referral. This free site allows you to register your websites and put them on a list under whatever category you choose. You can leave your sites alone from there and do nothing if you wish. You can receive views of your site and if people like your site they can "review" it and give comments and feedback and score of 1-5 stars. If you want to put some extra effort into this website you can look at 30 sites everyday (I usually devote 30 minutes to this every other day) and by looking at other sites you are moving your website to the top of the list. You also can "review" and give comments on up to 5 websites per day which also helps improve your ranking on the list.
I love this website. Like I said earlier I usually don't visit the recommended 30 everyday, but about every other day. It only takes about 30 minutes to do this if I am rushing through. The return I gain from this website especially when I take the time to do my "homework" for the site is huge. This site easily is to blame for a good 30% of traffic to my blogs (even higher than that on my game blog Random Games). I would most definitely recommend signing up for this site. Even if you do not want to do the extra work of view other websites, your site will still get hits because most everyone else is doing their 30 views. Check it out and let me know what you think!
