Mylot and Blogs

A while back I was big on Mylot. Mylot is a website that is like a discussion board, or forum where you get paid to participate in discussions. They now have a new feature that allows you to add your blog to Mylot, so I'm adding this blog to my Mylot profile to hopefully generate some more readers, and perhaps the readers of this blog will join Mylot.

Weird Stuff For Sale

Recently there was a weird toilet for sale listing posted on Ocala4sale.com. It was custom made toilet of an outstretched hand, and who wouldn't want that in their house?! This is just one of the unusual things you can find for sale in the USA4sale networks. They have a whole directory of "Odd Ads and Cool Classifieds" to check out. Let me know what you think of some of their other listings!

Gardening

As we are getting to be about 9 days until we move I have been contemplating all the changes that will happen in our lives. New responsibilities we've never had. When you are a student in college living in an apartment in most cases you don't have to pay all your utilities. That is one new experience and I'm nervous about it. Since we've never had to pay a water bill or sewer bill, how expensive is it going to be? The biggest change and the one I want to dwell on in this post is gardening.

Living in an apartment or condo also meant you had zero responsibility for the gardening and upkeep of the lawn. Before we went on our house hunting trip last week I was dreading having to start mowing a lawn, planting plants, having a garden, and keeping the plants alive. I haven't been the best at keeping things alive so far in my life. After the house hunting trip, however, I have found a major change in my attitude. realizing that the grass and plants and garden are MINE! It is my yard that I own and I WANT to take care of it. I'm proud of the dirt I will own and I want it to look beautiful. When we go to places like Walmart I find myself stopping to look at the plants and wonder which plants will survive best in our new state. I look forward to going to a nursery there and finding out which plants will thrive. I'm very excited to get some plants and get my hands dirty with planting! We don't own a lawn mower, so I look forward to getting one (but I'll leave the mowing up to my husband because I don't look forward to that). I am pleased with my change of attitude and when we finally get a house I'll be sure to update you with pictures on the process of our new yard and the beatification process we will begin!

Meet the Robinson's

Last night we took the girls to Meet the Robinson's. Now I watch a lot of Disney channel with my daughter and so I have seen a lot of previews and behind the scene things of this movie and I honestly wasn't looking forward to seeing it. We chose that movie because it was the only cartoon play at the theater and my daughter would only sit through a cartoon. The movie from the previews didn't look very good, but after seeing the movie, I love it! There are fun and interesting twist and turns throughout the movie. Some of the other people I saw the movie with were figuring out the plot while the movie went along but I didn't. I was trying to figure it out, I was enjoying just sitting and watching and not thinking about it. It was a very fun movie with a lot of fun surprises. I think when this one comes out on DVD I definitely want to purchase it. For some reason it kept being talked about in my family in regards to The Incredible. People were saying, "I like it more (or less) than The Incredibles." I didn't like The Incredibles so I really liked it more, but my husband loves The Incredibles so he didn't think it was better, but he did think it was a good movie. Anyway, it is totally a flick I recommend, very family friendly and fun to watch.

Baby Sitting Teenagers

We are off for a couple days to go "down below" (California talk for going to LA) to baby sit my husbands two teenage sisters. My husbands parents are off to his other sister's college graduation and would prefer that their teenagers were alone for 3 days. We will have internet access so we may be able to post, but just in case we can't, we will be back on Saturday. To make it fun they are leaving us movie tickets for when the girls are at school tomorrow and they got a couple "gifts to stick in the DVD player" so we are excited. The girls don't really need to be babysat since one of them can drive, but being home alone at night can be scary no matter how old you are. So have a great weekend and if we don't see you sooner, we'll see you on Saturday!

The Volvo S80: Luxury Comes with Interesting Features

I have seen a lot of commercials lately for the new Volvo S80, it looks like a really cool car with a lot of interesting features but some of these features concern me. Before I get in to that, here are some of the S80 features that I have always wanted in a car. With all the latest wireless technology, things like Bluetooth and WiFi, I have though to myself wouldn't it be cool if your car would lock as you walked away from the car and unlocked as you walked toward it. The new S80 keyless entry not only provides a button to unlock the doors but as you walk toward the car the keyless entry on your key chain in your pocket communicates with the car and unlocks the doors without having to push any buttons. It even goes further to continue to communicate with the car once you are inside allowing you to start the engine with the push of a button. The keyless entry pad still provides buttons for locking and unlocking the doors, opening the trunk, and setting off the alarm, but also includes an information button to check the status of the car, things like if the doors are locked or unlocked and if the alarm has gone off or not. Here is where things start to concern me; if the car alarm has gone off, there is a heart beat sensor inside the car that will let you know if there is someone inside, two flashing lights on the keyless entry pad next to the panic button let you know that some is inside your car.
I don't know about you but if I am going to spend almost $40,000 on a car, I would expect it to do a pretty good job preventing someone from breaking into it. And on top of that if someone did break into my $40,000 car I doubt he would be sitting inside waiting for me to show up, in fact he probably be driving it to the nearest chop shop. I am sure that the S80 has a good alarm system and all the engineers that designed the car did all they could to make the car as secure as possible, but I think that all the time and money used to develop this security feature could have been better spent on features that prevents someone from getting inside the car in the first place.

To Buy Here or There?

When we move we will be moving to a place out in the rural country. It could definitely be classified as small town USA. We have been thinking that some of the things we need we should perhaps buy while we still live in California because it may be a pain to get them once we move to the middle of no where. We are thinking that while we live really close to a Circuit City and a Best Buy that we should get a computer printer. Ours got stolen out of our storage unit, and it is something we definitely will need. There are a lot of cool printers that do everything. They copy, print, scan, print pictures, and probably juggle! They aren't very expensive either. We are looking at ones around the $100 range since that is all the storage unit place gave us to replace it. We figure we should buy it now and not have to worry about it when we move because by then we will be having to drive an hour to get to a circuit city or some place like that. I'm sure there will other things we should probably get before we leave, but won't think of them until we are in the middle of no where and forced to drive the hour to go buy it! Oh well, what can you do?

Random Time

Some of our newer readers may not be aware of the "Random World" they are surrounded by here at Random Encounters of We. Random Encounters of We is the "mother ship" if you will of our "Random World." We have a collection of "random" blog and I'd like to invite everyone to check them out. If you have some down time or are looking for some free online fun, there is a fun game blog that we run called "Random Games." That blog has received some rave reviews and would love to entertain you if you are looking to be entertained. There is also another blog that my husband is the author of. Now with being laid off, job hunting and now house hunting it has been a little neglected, but he will be getting back to it, and the articles currently there are great. That blog is for the kid in all of us because it is about Random Super Heroes. I just thought I'd put a plus in for the other blogs since it had been a while. I hope you have a fascinating time visiting those other blogs! Enjoy!

We Are Back!

Well the long silence is over and we are home from our house hunting trip. Man, we thought job hunting was a roller coaster, house hunting was ten times worse. We saw a ton of houses, most we really liked. There was one that stood out to us and loved it so we put an offer in. After soon negotiating the sellers weren't willing to budge on their price, and we couldn't match their price so we walked away from it. After the sellers slept on it the next morning at 7am they made a counter offer. We didn't find out about that until until 5pm. We were going to sleep on the counter offer and see what kind of interest rates were available to us, but then we got a call saying they pulled their offer and received another offer. We waited while they negotiated the second offer and then the next day finally found out they accepted the other offer. We at first were very mad that we had a counter offer all day and didn't find out about it until that evening, but then we crunched some numbers and saw what the house payment would have been and we got over it. We have come home from our trip without a home to move into so when we move in a couple weeks we will be moving into a hotel until we get a home. We are too excited about that. Now that we have had some experience with buying a home I think we will do a lot better next time and hopefully win the next house we love!

My United States

Here is the before and after of the United States color page. I have a goal to go to all the states before I die and I am over half way there. I have been to 26 states. Now I'm not picky at what count as a visit. A couple of the states I have only been in the airport, but for now that is good enough for me. Maybe if I hit them all, I'll be able to go back to the ones where I'm just counting an airport visit. Right now that if only about 3 of my 26 states, so not too many. How many states have you guys been to?

Coloring Pages

I like to keep track of all the States I have visited through a coloring book page of the United States. When we moved to California I lost my state map and have talked about trying to find one for the past year. Tonight I finally remembered to look it up on the internet and I stumbled across this very fun website, it's called Coloring Castle. This website has coloring pages of everything you could want from the states, to birthday pages, to numbers and letters. It is a very fun website. I am planning on printing out all the numbers and letters and making a coloring book for my daughter to help her learn those things. You can also print some pages and make activity books for your kids to take when traveling, or when you need them to be entertained and quiet. This is a great site! Check it out, and I hope you can find some fun coloring pages!

Job Hunt 5th and Final Edition

If you would like to catch up on the ups and down of our job hunting you can read about it here with the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th editions.

Well it has been a little over two weeks now since my husband got laid off. Fortunately we had been looking for a new job since November, not because he disliked his job, but because we cannot afford a home in California and wanted to see some other part of the country. When he got laid off a couple Friday's ago, he had a fly out interview that next Thursday. That interview turned into a job offer last Tuesday. After a week of negotiations we have finally signed off on that job and we are moving!

It feels good to know that we have a job to go to. We have now been treating my husband's time off as paid vacation and we have been able to relax a little bit. We now are starting into the unknown world of first time home buying. My dad has bought and sold properties on numerous occasions through out his life so we have been getting a LOT of advice, some asked for, some not. I keep hearing phrases from him like "the agent works for the seller, don't become her best friend because she works for the seller" and other things like "reoccurring and non reoccurring costs" or "junk fees." I feel a lot more informed now that I did a week ago.

Later this week we will be house hunting in the new state where our job is. I've wanted my own home since I was a little girl, but with everything my Dad has told me I've been questioning that lately. There is a lot more than looking at a house, falling in love with it, and signing some papers. Who knew? Certainly not me. Now that I am more informed I feel like I will less get taken advantage of, but I'm still nervous to tackle this with my parents. I'm worried that people there won't give me the best advice like my Dad would. Hopefully I've learned enough to be smart and stand up for what is best for my husband and me. I have learned to use my Dad's HP calculator so when we are meeting with the lender and such I can do my own calculations to make sure everything is checking out. Hopefully that will show them that they can't take advantage of me. I am trying to not adopts my Dad's philosophy that "everyone is out to get you, and everything is a scam." Between my husband and I, all that we have learned, and with some instinct I hope all will be well, and maybe next week I'll be able to report that I am the proud new owner of a home!

Non Invasive Tumor Treatment

It used to be that if you had brain tumors that needed to be operated on you had to go through a risky surgery that involved cutting into your head. There is now something called a Gamma Knife that allows neurosurgeons to perform brain surgery without cutting into their patients. By orbiting the patients head, the Gamma Knife is able to discharge a powerful beam of energy that can destroy brain tumors. Unfortunately many people do not know about this brain tumor treatment option. I know there are many different kinds of brain tumors that lead to many different treatment options. My sister has a brain tumor but it able to keep things under control with medicine. Another person I know had to have an incredibly dangerous surgery to have his brain tumor removed. Perhaps if the word gets spread, less people will have to undergo those dangerous surgery's, to have a safer form of brain tumor treatment.

Healing Wounds

Have you ever heard or been told that letting your wound get some air is good for it? When I was younger and I would get a cut and put a band aid on it, a couple days later my mom would say to me "why don't you take off the band aid and let your cut get some air. " I used to believe this theory... until I had my skin cancer taken out and received a set of instructions to care for my wound. Would you like to know the truth? Here it is:

A wound will actually heal faster and with a better cosmetic result if it is kept clean and cover with ointment and a fresh bandage. Also instead of using neosporin use polysporin, this will help the wound to heal a more natural color where as neosporin will help it heal red. This is the exact opposite of letting your wound get some air to heal faster. Now I haven't had a wound previous to my skin cancer wound in a while, nor have I ever had one so big, so I don't remember how fast the healing process usually takes. I will say that I think my wound is healing at a not-so-fast pace, but I have had a few difficulties with it. Since this advice of keeping my wound covered and freshly bandaged with medicine on it is coming from my dermatologist I will take that to be a fact. I figure a doctor knows best and if he says the open wound policy is an old wives tale then I believe it. I'll let you know when things really start healing well.

A lot of the animals weren't in there cages because of construction and such so we gave the zoo a C grade. If you are planning a trip to the LA zoo wait for a while. And the Winner is...

Well as you can tell from the picture my husband won. His egg was the prettiest one we made, and it took the most skill. I made an egg kinda like that last year but I used a q-tip, he did that all by dipping layers, no q-tips. We hope everyone has a special Easter and can keep the spirit of it in their hearts.

Cheap Broadband

Are you from the UK and looking for some cheap Broadband? Listen on! There is a website called Broadband Suppliers that has a complete guide that lists all the different companies and prices to help you compare broadband providers. This guide also lists the speed of the broadband and all the deals available to you.

When you visit the website you are automatically taken to a table on the front page with all the information you could possibly need to do your comparative shopping. They answer questions and tell you all about different kinds of broadband ISP. You can also check the availability of broadband in your area.

We recently switched to broadband but because of where we live there was only one option available. For a while we didn't think there was any broadband in the area, so an availability checker would have come in very handy for us.

Check out the website and good luck with your broadband shopping. Once you go fast there no going back!

Goldilocks and the Three YEARS

We just got some new books for our daughter and we read some of the new ones to her before she went to bed last night. One of the books was Goldilocks and the Three Bears; I grew up hearing this story all the time but tonight I noticed an interesting underlying message in the story. Basically the story boils down to a little girl walking into someone else's house, eating someone else's food and using and abusing someone else's furniture. Now the last time I check, I thought doing something like this was called 'breaking and entering', which could possibly result in some jail time considering there was property damage. But I think that most kids will not see the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears as a story about breaking and entering, but I wonder if this theme is picked up on some sub conscience level. The next time I read this story I might emphasize the ending of the story where the bears are very upset and chase Goldilocks out of the house.
Then I started thinking about all the other fair tales that are read to children as bedtime stories and what kind of underlying messages they could be teaching. The story of Hansel and Gretel is a perfect example of kidnapping. In the story of the Three Little Pigs, the wolf is seriously harassing those little pigs; what they should have done was get a restraining order against him instead or running from house to house, but like a little piece of paper is going to stop the wolf from blowing their house down.
I know that most kids, and most adults for that matter, will never see these fair tales as examples of criminal acts; I just thought this was a funny way to look at these classic fairy tale stories.

Ad Monsters

I'm sorry if it seems like there are some new ad monsters on our page. We are experimenting to try and increase our ad revenue. Now that my husband (aka Random2) doesn't have a job he can spend more time fiddling with the blog, testing new ad placements. We see now, more than we did before, how helpful it would be if this blog were generating more money and so we are doing some tweaking to see what works the best. Any input, advice, and tips would be greatly welcomed.

Star Wars Stamps

The United States Postal Service as announced a collection of 15 Star Wars Stamps, which includes images from a six movies that are apart of the Star Wars saga. The announcment was made at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles, where the first movie opened nearly 30 years ago. The images included in this collection are: Luke Skywalker; Han Solo and Chewbacca; Princess Leia Organa with R2-D2; C-3PO; Yoda; Queen Padmé Amidala; Obi-Wan Kenobi as seen in Episodes IV, V, and VI, Anakin Skywalker battling Obi-Wan Kenobi; Darth Vader; Emperor Palpatine; Darth Maul; Imperial Stormtroopers; Boba Fett; the Millennium Falcon; and an X-wing fighter. In addition the Post Office is ask people to vote for their favorite stamp in the set and the stamp that receives the most votes will honored with a single stamp sheet. You can vote here.
When I heard about this, I thought to myself I need to start mailing letters so I can use these stamps, but then I thought that I should just buy a sheet as a collector. Here is a quote from the unveiling ceremony that I thought was quite humorous:
Because of the movies’ popularity, we believe these stamps have the potential of reaching the blockbuster status of the Elvis stamp, a milestone only the Force could attempt to surpass. The Star Wars films have timeless qualities that cross generations, just like the United States Postal Service.
That last sentence is exactly how I see the USPS, but it's more like email is timeless because it doesn't take time to send.
